Custom Lace Hairpieces and Wigs by Lavette Slater

Just wanted to introduce my Custom Lace Hairpieces and Wigs! Having fabulous hair is what makes us “fabulous”. Over the years I’ve had many clients that have had different and special hair care needs .There are some that suffer from thinning hair, alopecia, permanent hair loss due to heredity and there are many that just want to have a different hair style and to protect their own hair from day to day heat styling. So, through supply and demand I’ve developed my own Custom Lace Hairpieces and Wigs. I’ve noticed that certain types of textured hair calls for certain types of hairpieces. That is why all of my hairpieces are customized and personalized. Hairpieces I think, are as personal as underclothes you must have the right fit. I sit down with all of my clients and develop a style and fit from cap size, density, texture and length. All of my hairpieces and wigs are then cut and styled. My hairpieces have been worn by many models, actors and celebrities but most commonly worn everyday by the funny and fabulous Sherri Shepherd from ABC’s The View. I customize all of her wigs I choose the cap size to the type of lace the hair will be tied on. All of Sherri’s wigs have different special types of lace which will last for years! After I customize her wig I cut and style every one of them to her face. Each wig is made of 100% high quality human hair and hand tied on fine quality special lace. There are so many variations of lace that make the hairpiece appear as if it’s your own hair coming out of your scalp.

Hosting VMV Hypoallergenic Holiday Shopping event

I partnered with VMV Hypoallergenics for a Holiday Shopping Event! VMV is a hypoallergenic cosmeceutical brand. It is 100% all types of fragrance free, 100% Phthatale, Dye, Paraben + Preservative free and non comdogenic. It was created in 1979 by a widely published renewed dermatologist and dermatopathologist, Dr. Vermen Verallo Rowell. It’s a brand that cares for men, women and children of all ages from head to toe. As someone who is allergic to just about everything I was happy to find that VMV is completely allergen free. Everybody knows me as the key hairstylist at ABC’s “The View” but I am also a licensed makeup artist, and as we all know the secret to “great makeup” is having “great healthy skin”. That saying goes for healthy hair as well. VMV carries a complete line of products from head to toe, makeup, skin care, hair care, toothpastes, detergents etc. It’s a great brand overall!

The event was held at the VMV Hypoallergenic Manhattan Boutique on December 7th. Clients and friends enjoyed a night of shopping, cocktails, nice music and to top the evening Sherri Shepherd came out to support. Fab! It was catered by the fabulous Ensucience and we enjoyed a fantastic dessert table by Elle’s Pastry Boutique. The wonderful music was provided by Luxury Event Music Specialist at OneSoundandEntertainment.com.

Halloween with “The View”…

Fun times at The View! This year the ladies decided to dress as zombie reality stars. Whoopi was a zombie “Whoopi” Steven Tyler, Sherri was a zombie Flava Flav, Elisabeth was a zombie bachelor in a bathtub full of barbie dolls, Joy was a zombie hoarder and Bill Geddie was the zombie bounty hunter. Kate Gosselin stopped by the show and allowed us hair and makeup to make her a zombie also! We had so much fun.

I originally styled a huge long dreaded wig for Whoopi. I like to put my own personal spin on her look sometimes, but we eventually just added dreaded extensions to her hair and cut it shorter. For Sherri I used a synthetic wig and blew it straight to get the signature Flava Flav hair. Sherri stayed in character the entire morning clowning around with all of us. It was hilarious! I loved Joy’s costume, wardrobe built her costume with books papers, all kinds of trash and she wore a house dress, so funny! I styled Bill in a long hairpiece with beads and shells on the sides similar to the bounty hunter, then trimmed a lace full beard and mustache. He loved the look. I styled Elisabeth similar to the bachelor giving her a short cut in dark brown. Overall this year was fun. Can’t wait till next year.

Full Makeover with Shellie Biviens

Shellie Biviens is a multitalented song writer, model, singer, activist, celebrity hairstylist, new mom and a good friend of mine. I had the pleasure of doing a complete makeover on her even though she didn’t need one.

I started off with prepping a hairpiece from my custom lace collection, a wavy textured hairpiece in a medium honey brown color, slightly lighter than Shellie’s base color. I made sure the hairpiece was washed and conditioned and protected with a leave in conditioner. Then I used a half inch sized curling iron to curl the hair using a light hairspray to set the curls.

While I let the hairpiece set I started on her makeup. Shellie already had great skin, she didn’t need a lot of coverage so I used airbrush makeup to give her a light finish. Here are the steps I used to get her look:

1) I used a greaseless moisturizer to soften her skin.

2) Then I started with her eyes, airbrushing her lids with a color slightly lighter than her skin color.

3) I then used a medium brown color eyeshadow to cover the entire lid, then followed up with a dark blue shadow over the the medium brown color. I used both shadow colors around her eyes to give a smokey contrast.

4) Then I lined her eyes with a black shadow dipping the brush in water to set the eyeliner.

5) I then airbrushed Shellie’s entire face, neck and ears with her color.

6) I used a lighter color airbrush foundation to highlight her cheek bones, forehead, down her nose, above her jaws and the arch of her brows. Then used a darker airbrush foundation and darkened under her cheek bones, sides of her nose and her jaw line.

7) Then I set her makeup with powder.

8) I applied medium length black lashes then finished her eyebrows with a dark brown pencil.

9) I then used a blush powder on her cheeks and around her hairline to blend the makeup.

10) I finished her makeup with a coco lipliner and pinkish lipgloss.

After I finished Shellie’s makeup I secured her own hair in cornrows and pins, leaving the perimeter of her hair out. I then applied the hairpiece. To make the hair look more natural I brushed out all of the curls then teased it.

As you can see she looked fabulous! It was so much fun and Shellie was a good sport! Thanks Shellie!
